Sawing instructions

Among the last and most conspicuous items installed in construction are the mouldings. Good workmanship and attractive mouldings give a lovely finish to the decor. ET mouldings are made of the finest Finnish pine, planed, surface treated and coated.

Cutting to length

Mouldings are most easily cut to length with a turning saw or a fine-toothed saw in a mitre box. The moulding should be cut from the side that will show after the installation.

Splice

A moulding can be extended either with a straight or mitred splice, which achieves a less visible joint.

Base mouldings, or other mouldings to be fixed to a wall, are best measured using two lengths of material. First mitre the opposite ends of the two mouldings. Then place the lengths against the wall slightly overlapping. Mark the position of the cut and saw through both lengths at once. Mitring at 45º produces an inconspicuous joint. A corner bead extension should be sawn in an upright position. The bead should be cut through in a mitre box from the side that will be visible when fitted to the corner.

Beading is most easily cut using a square strip to prevent movement.

When installing windows and doors where the sills are thinner than the walls, a neat finish is obtained by installing edging/square beading to eliminate the dimensional difference between the sill and the wall.
